Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Woodford Green

The treatment is only the middle of the story: what you see in the days afterwards, what to do about the empty nest and how to close the gap all deserve a plan.

What you will see straight away

For the first day or so after treatment, activity at the old entrance does not stop at once. Wasps that were out foraging when the nest was treated come back to find the entrance changed, and they hover and land around the spot before gradually losing interest. This is normal and is not a sign that the visit has failed.

Keep children and pets away from that wall for the rest of the day, and keep nearby windows closed. If you need to use a door beneath the old entrance, move calmly. Expect the numbers to fall noticeably within a couple of days.

Weather can affect how long the stragglers last. Warm, bright days keep wasps flying for longer, and cool, damp ones bring a quicker end to the activity.

You may also notice dead or dying wasps on window sills, patios or the ground beneath the entrance. Sweep them up with a brush and pan, wearing gloves, and put them in the bin. Avoid handling them barehanded.

When to get in touch again

If you still see a steady stream of wasps entering the same gap several days later, or wasps start appearing indoors in numbers, contact us. It may be that there is a second nest or a second entrance, and an additional nest on the same property is £35 more. Describe what you have seen, where and when.

A few stragglers hanging about is not a reason to worry. A continuing stream of arrivals is.

Keep a short note of dates, so that when you ring, you can say that the treatment was on a particular day and what you have seen since. That makes it easier to work out whether you have an ordinary tail-off or something that needs another look.

If you notice a lot of wasps in the garden away from the roofline, that is not necessarily the same nest. Wasps from other nests in the neighbourhood visit gardens in summer, especially where there is food. Pay attention to the entrance in particular.

The empty nest

A treated nest does not simply vanish. The paper structure stays where it was built, which for a roofline nest is usually inside a cavity behind the fascia or soffit. It poses no further danger, and the colony does not survive the winter in any case, since old nests are not reused.

Whether the empty nest can be taken down depends on where it is and how it can be reached. If you want to know, ask the technician when you book or on the day. In many cases it is left in place, and the focus is on repairing the gap so that it cannot be used again. If a builder does open the board later, they may come across the old nest. It can be removed wearing gloves, and it should not be a concern.

Do not expect to see the nest from outside. It may be completely hidden, and some roofline nests are never seen by the household at all. The absence of a visible nest is not a sign that treatment has not worked; what you should watch is the wasp traffic, not the nest.

Do not rush to seal

It is tempting to fill the gap on the first evening. A better approach is to wait for the activity to stop completely, which normally takes a few days, then arrange the repair. Sealing too soon risks trapping stragglers inside, and they may find another way out, sometimes into the room beneath.

When you do close the gap, use a builder or carpenter who can work safely at height. Ask them to replace rotten timber rather than painting over it, to re-fix loose boards and to fit a fine mesh to any vents.

If you are in a hurry, arrange the repair for the first dry week after the wasps have stopped. There is no need to wait until winter if the board is damaged and rain is getting in.

Checking the roofline for other weak spots

While the repair is being arranged, take a slow walk round the whole building. The nest was in one place, but the same conditions may be present elsewhere: cracked corners, lifted soffit panels, open joints and weathered bargeboards. Ask the builder to quote for all of them together.

A short note in your diary for the following April, to check the roofline for early activity, helps too. Wasps start building from late April depending on the weather.

Where the gap was in a shared roofline, let the neighbour know the nest has been treated so that they, too, can arrange any repair.

Think about timing for the repair, too. A dry, mild week in late summer or autumn suits sealant and paint. Bear in mind that tradespeople may be booked up in the busy months, so ask early.

Booking and cost

If you are reading this before booking, treatment in Woodford Green and the surrounding area costs a fixed £90 per nest, with one visit guaranteed, and an additional nest on the same property is £35 more. The service runs seven days a week, and same-day service is part of what we offer. To talk it through or book, phone 01245 327274 or send the booking form on our contact page and describe what you have seen. If anyone in the household is allergic to wasp stings, say so at booking so that the visit can be prioritised.

Keep a note of the repair and the work done, because it helps if you sell or let the property, or if you need to show a landlord or managing agent what was done.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to see wasps for a few days after treatment?
Yes. Returning foragers gather at the old entrance and gradually disperse. A continuing stream after several days is worth reporting.
Will the old nest be reused?
No. Wasps do not reuse nests, though a new founding wasp may pick the same gap if it is still open.
Can I move the old nest myself?
Please ask the technician first. It depends on where the nest is, and many are best left until the roofline is repaired.
