Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Wix Garden Owners Should Know
Knowing what the visit involves, and what you can do beforehand, makes the whole thing calmer and means the technician can get on with the job.
Before the technician arrives
Once you have booked, there are a few simple steps that make the visit smoother. First, keep everyone away from the hedge, including visitors. Second, think about how the technician will reach it: through a side gate, across the lawn or along the path. Clear anything that blocks the route, but only from a distance, never by leaning into the hedge.
If the hedge is next to a driveway or path, check that there is space for the technician to park nearby. A clear stretch of kerb or drive saves time.
Keep pets and children indoors from shortly before the agreed time, with windows on the hedge side closed. Bring in washing, toys and anything else from the area.
If you have a dog, make sure it is secured. Even a friendly dog can get in the way.
If you have a gate with a latch that sticks or a gravel path that is hard to wheel equipment over, say so. The technician carries kit, and a smooth route makes the job quicker. Moving a car to free up space is a small help that is much appreciated.
What the technician will do
On arrival, the technician will want to see where the wasps are going. Show them from a distance, and share your notes or photographs. They will then look at the hedge themselves, find the entrance and decide how to treat the nest.
The treatment itself is their job, and you do not need to be involved or to watch. We do not go into the details of the method, but the nest is treated and the wasps are dealt with, and the work is fully insured.
The price is fixed. The first nest is £90 flat, and an additional nest on the same property is £35 flat. If the technician finds a second nest, that is the price, and it does not depend on where it is or what time of day the visit is.
One visit is guaranteed with the price.
Do not be surprised if the technician asks questions. They may want to know when you first saw the wasps, whether anyone has been stung, and whether anything has been tried before. Honest answers give them the full picture.
Where to be during the visit
It is best to stay indoors, with doors and windows closed on the hedge side. You can watch from a window if you like, as long as it is not too close. If you want to talk to the technician, wait until they have finished or call them from the doorway.
If you are out, make sure the technician can reach the hedge. Tell us about locked gates, steps or animals when you book, and leave clear instructions. You do not have to be present, but we will need to be able to get to the nest.
Keep your phone nearby. The technician may need to confirm something with you.
Keep children away from the windows if they are likely to wave at the wasps or tap on the glass.
A good plan for the day is to put the kettle on, keep the family inside and let the technician get on. If you need to leave, tell them where you will be. Payment arrangements can be discussed when you book, so that nothing needs to be settled at the door.
After the treatment
When the work is done, the technician will tell you what to expect. Wasps from the colony that were away from the nest may return for a short time, so you may still see a few around the old entrance. They should dwindle.
Ask when it is safe to use that part of the garden and to cut the hedge. Ask, too, whether the empty nest can be taken down. That depends on where it is, and the technician can tell you on the spot.
Keep an eye on the area over the following days. If you see a steady line of wasps still using the same entrance, let us know.
Keep an eye on windows and doors for a day or two afterwards. Stray wasps sometimes find their way indoors, and closing windows on the hedge side is a simple precaution. If you notice a wasp at the glass, open a window on the far side of the room and let it leave.
Write down the date of the visit, so that if you notice anything later you can say exactly how many days it has been.
If you are stung before the visit
If someone is stung, wash the sting with water, take the sting out if you can see it and hold a cold pack against the skin. Dial 999 if the person develops wheezing or difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat or dizziness.
If anyone in the household is allergic to wasp stings, tell us when you book so the booking can be prioritised.
Do not try to see the nest before the visit. Staying away from the hedge is the best preparation.
