Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Two Tree Island

A few minutes spent noting what you have seen, from a safe distance, means the technician arrives knowing where to look and what equipment to bring.

Why preparation helps

A call about wasps at the gutter goes more smoothly when you can describe what you have seen. The technician does not need a perfect report, but a few facts let them plan the right access equipment, work out how long to allow and arrive knowing where to look. That in turn means you spend less time waiting for the job to be done.

The checklist below takes ten minutes and can all be done from the ground. None of it requires you to approach the nest, touch the roofline or climb anything. If at any point wasps seem to be taking an interest in you, stop and go indoors.

Think of it as the same preparation you would do before a plumber or electrician visits: you do not need to diagnose the fault, just describe the symptoms. The technician will then decide on the approach and carry out the checks that need professional equipment. If you are writing the details down, keep the note short and factual so that you can read it out over the phone.

Where is the activity?

Start with position. Stand back until you can see the whole wall, and work out which side of the building the wasps are using: front, back or side. Then note the height. A useful way of describing it is by reference to the windows: level with the first-floor windows, just above the ground-floor window, or above the front door.

Next, identify the feature. Is the entrance at a gutter bracket, at the end of a fascia board, in the underside of the eaves or at the corner where two walls meet? Even an approximate description, such as “the left-hand end of the back gutter, above the kitchen window”, is plenty.

If the wall has a rendered or painted finish, mention the colour, since it helps when you are describing the spot to someone who has not seen the building. Say too if there is scaffolding, a skip or other building work close to the area, because the technician will need to know about anything that restricts access or that could be disturbed.

How busy is it?

Watch for a few minutes and give a rough idea of the traffic. You need not count precisely. Is it a wasp every minute or two, or a continuous stream? Does it change at different times of day? Busier traffic suggests a larger and more established colony, which the technician will want to know.

Also note when you first noticed the wasps. If they began arriving in late spring, the nest has had a long time to grow. If they appeared only a week ago, it may be a younger nest. If you are not sure, say so.

A final detail worth noting is whether the traffic is on one board only or runs along the length of the roofline. A single narrow stream normally indicates one entrance. Several streams across a wide stretch of wall can mean a large nest with more than one opening, or even two nests. Either way, the technician will assess it, and a second nest on the same property is £35 more.

Photos and video

Take a few photos from a distance, using your phone’s zoom. A wide shot of the wall, a closer shot of the area with activity and, if possible, a ten-second video of the wasps going in and out will do. Don’t use flash and don’t walk close for a better angle.

If wasps are also appearing inside, photograph the room, the window and the ceiling area. Note whether the room is directly beneath the roofline where you saw the activity.

Keep the photographs on your phone until the work is finished, since the repairer may also find them useful. If you share the building with neighbours, send them a copy as well. They may be seeing wasps from their side of the wall and a shared roofline can have a single nest affecting several households.

People, pets and access

Tell us about anyone in the household who is allergic to wasp stings, so the booking can be prioritised. Mention small children, older relatives or pets who spend time in the garden. Say whether the side of the house can be reached through a gate, whether it is locked, and whether a car or other items are parked underneath.

For a business, mention opening hours, staff and customers who may be near the entrance, and who will meet the technician. We cover homes and commercial premises and are fully insured.

Keep people away from the affected area until the nest is treated. Should someone be stung, wash the skin, scrape the sting out if it is still in the skin and hold a cold pack against it. Call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash.

If wasps are getting into the property, tell us which rooms and when. A technician who knows that wasps have been seen at a kitchen window every afternoon, for example, can work out where the entrance is likely to be and look there first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take photos?
No, but they help. If you cannot, a clear description of the wall, the height and the feature is enough.
What if I cannot tell where the nest is?
Say where you have seen the wasps and the technician will look. Many nests are hidden, so locating them is part of the visit.
Should I tell you about other nests on the property?
Yes. A second nest on the same property is £35 and can usually be dealt with on the same visit.
