Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Alphamstone? Here's What to Do
A window is where wasps in the house end up, because they head for the light, so a crowd on the glass tells you more than a single stray does.
Why the window?
Wasps that get into a house behave in a predictable way. They fly towards the brightest thing they can see, which is the nearest window, and then try to go through the glass. They tap, crawl and buzz, and they stay there until they die or you open the window.
This is why a loft nest first shows itself on the window sill. Wasps come down through a gap in the ceiling, find themselves in a room, head for the light and collect on the glass. The more often you see them there, the more likely it is that something overhead is feeding the stream.
A single wasp on the glass in July proves very little. A handful over several days, in the same upstairs room, proves a lot.
Upstairs windows matter most, simply because the loft is above them. A downstairs window with a wasp or two is more likely to be a visitor from the garden.
Curtain folds and blinds
Wasps like to settle in folds, creases and narrow gaps. Curtains, blinds and pelmets give them places to crawl into, and a wasp hidden in a fold is easy to disturb by accident. Many stings occur when someone pulls a curtain or lifts a blind without looking.
- Look before you touch: check curtains and blinds from a distance before moving them.
- Move slowly and avoid sudden tugs.
- Use a glass and a stiff card to move a wasp from a window sill, if you are confident to do so.
- Keep the curtains in affected rooms open in the day and closed after dusk, so the light does not draw wasps in.
If a wasp is trapped between curtain and glass, open the window and let it find the way out.
If you have net curtains, check them from a distance too. Fine fabric folds easily and wasps can become tangled in it, which makes them more likely to sting when you move it. Take net curtains down only once you are sure the room is clear.
Opening and closing windows
It can seem natural to keep windows shut to stop wasps coming in. But if wasps are already in the room, a shut window traps them against the glass, where they become agitated. A better approach is to open the window furthest from you, step away and let them leave.
If you want fresh air without wasps, fit a fine mesh over the opening. A temporary mesh frame is enough while you wait for the nest to be dealt with.
Do not leave a lit lamp near an open window at night. It draws insects in and gives wasps a reason to stay.
Roller blinds are a particular trap. A wasp that has crawled into the roll can be released all at once when you pull the blind down. Leave blinds as they are in affected rooms until the nest is treated.
Reading the pattern
Which windows have the most wasps? If they are all in a room directly beneath the loft, the nest is probably above it. If they are on one side of the house, the entrance may be on that side. A window facing the sun may attract more in the afternoon.
Keep a short log: the date, the room, the number of wasps. A week of notes is worth far more than a general feeling that there are lots of wasps. Pass it on when you book.
Do not use the window as a place to swat or spray. A spray at the glass is unlikely to help and fills the room with fumes.
A glance at the outside of the same window is also worth a moment. Wasps clustered on the outer glass may be trying to get in, which suggests the stream is coming from outside. Wasps inside only suggest a route from the ceiling.
Compare mornings with afternoons too. If the window is calm in the morning and crowded after lunch, you are likely seeing wasps released from the ceiling as the loft warms up. That timing is typical of a nest overhead.
Booking
Wasp Nest Removal Essex is open seven days a week, offers same-day service and covers Alphamstone and surrounding villages, for homes and commercial premises. Each nest is treated for a fixed £90 and one visit is guaranteed. Any extra nest on the same property is £35 each.
Call 01245 327274 or send a booking through the contact page form. Tell the business which windows have the most wasps. If anyone at home is allergic to stings, say so at the time so the booking can be prioritised.
If your windows are old and have gaps in the frame, tell the technician. Wasps may be using them as a way in, and a repair could be part of the job after treatment.
Clearing the sills afterwards
When the nest is treated, the stream of wasps stops, and the ones on the glass will die off over a short time. Sweep them up with shoes on, and wipe the sill. Shake curtains out in the garden, once you are sure the room is quiet, and check the folds.
The technician can tell you whether the empty nest can be taken down. In spring, watch the same windows. A new wasp on the glass in April or May may be a scout, and is a signal to check the roof edge.
Window frames are a good place to look for gaps next spring. A fresh bead of sealant, applied once all is quiet, keeps the glass tight and the room comfortable.
