Are Wasps Dangerous? Understanding Stings and Nest Disturbance in Stondon Massey

An outbuilding that sits shut for months can hold a wasp colony by midsummer, and the person who opens the door is the one who pays for it.

Why outbuildings suit wasps

A garden shed, a garage, a summerhouse or a lean-to store ticks every box for a nesting wasp. It is dry, sheltered and quiet, with gaps around the roof, the door frame or the floor that a wasp can slip through. Old boxes, tools and stored furniture offer plenty of corners to build in. Nobody goes in for weeks, so nothing interrupts the work.

Wasps start building from late April depending on the weather, which means the first small nest may be established while the building is still untouched from winter. By the time you need a lawnmower or a bag of compost in July, the colony may be sizeable.

This is why outbuildings produce so many unpleasant surprises. You open the door as you always do, and the wasps meet you on the threshold.

The usual warning is wasps coming and going near the roof or the base of the door, and it is easy to miss.

Consider a typical case. A household opens the garage in July to fetch the strimmer, which has stood unused since autumn. A dozen wasps are crawling on the inside of the window and a steady few are leaving through a gap above the door. The householder walks away, closes the door and rings for help, which is exactly the right response and avoids a day spent nursing stings.

Spotting trouble before you open the door

A minute of looking is far safer than a moment of pulling the door open. Stand back and watch for traffic around the eaves, the corners of the roof, the top of the door frame and any gap along the bottom of the wall.

If you see any of these, do not go in. Lock the door or shut it and mark the building as off-limits for now. Tell the rest of the household.

Summerhouses and playhouses deserve special thought because children use them. If a child's den has wasps at the window or round the roof edge, tell them clearly that it is out of bounds, and move the toys later, when the nest has been treated.

What happens when you disturb a nest indoors

Inside a closed building wasps have nowhere to go but towards you. Opening the door sends a rush of air through the space, sunlight flooding in and a person standing at the entrance, all of which can alarm the guards. Moving boxes, pulling out a mower or banging a tool against a wall adds vibration.

The enclosed space also makes escape harder. Tools, bikes and shelving block the way, and the door may be the only exit. People often panic and run into the building rather than away from it.

By August the nest can hold 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps, so a nest disturbed inside a small shed can quickly fill the building. If this happens, step backwards out of the door, close it if you can without waiting, and walk away towards the house.

Sheds with felt roofs, loose boards or gaps under the floor are particularly open to wasps. Ground nests can also sit directly beneath a shed, so wasps may emerge from the base rather than the roof.

Garages and attached buildings

A garage attached to the house raises a particular worry: wasps can move between the garage and the living space through gaps around doors, pipes and the loft hatch. Keep the internal door shut if you suspect a nest, and place a rolled towel along the base.

Do not park the car in a way that blocks your exit or leaves the boot open next to the nest. Wasps may enter a car, so check seats before driving.

If a nest is behind a cupboard, in a ceiling void or inside wall insulation, do not drill, cut or pull anything out. Leave the structure undisturbed. Vibration through a wall is enough to alarm a colony on the other side, and cutting into a ceiling opens a path to the room below.

Log stores, bike shelters and bin stores are the same in principle: dry, quiet, and handy for a small colony. Give them a quick look from outside in the early season.

Looking after anyone who is stung

Move away from the building, take everyone with you and shut the door. Wash the stings with cool water, remove any visible sting and apply a cold pack. Be especially watchful if the person was stung more than once.

Ring 999 immediately for swelling of the face, lips or throat, feeling faint or dizzy, a widespread rash or wheezing or difficulty breathing. People who know they are allergic should tell their GP about their situation in advance and should avoid going near an outbuilding where a nest is suspected.

Do not go back to collect tools or the mower for now. Retrieving them while the wasps are agitated risks further stings. The advice above is general information and not medical advice.

Keep ladders and long-handled tools away from the walls where you have seen traffic. Reaching up to a roof edge with a pole is as risky as climbing.

Having the nest treated

A nest inside a building is a job for a technician, not a stepladder and a torch. You pay a single fixed price of £90 per nest, including one visit guaranteed. A further nest on the same property is £35 more. The business is open seven days a week, offers same-day service and is fully insured, working for homes and commercial buildings alike.

You can book by calling 01245 327274 or else filling in the enquiry form on the site’s contact page. Explain which building it is, where the traffic is and whether anyone is allergic. The technician covers Stondon Massey and nearby villages.

Ask at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down, since a nest inside a shed is often easy to remove afterwards. Until then, keep the door shut and keep everyone out.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to go into the shed if I only see a few wasps?
A few wasps may mean a nest is nearby. Watch from outside first and look for traffic at one point; if you see it, stay out and arrange treatment.
Should I leave the shed door open to let wasps out?
Not if a nest is inside. An open door can lead to wasps coming out towards you and wandering into the house. Keep it shut and keep away.
Can I store things in a shed that had a nest last year?
Old nests are not reused, but check carefully in spring for new building. Gaps around the roof and door frame are the usual way in.
