Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Stambourne
When the nest is at the eaves over a bedroom, the problems are open windows, early-morning buzzing and the worry of waking to wasps, and each has a sensible answer.
Why bedrooms are affected
A nest close to a bedroom window brings the noise and traffic right up to where people sleep. Wasps use the shortest route from the entrance to the open air, and that may pass directly across the window. In warm weather, with the window open at night, a few may drift in and be found on the ceiling or the curtains in the morning.
It is not usually dangerous, but it is unsettling, particularly for children or anyone who is nervous around insects. A few sensible steps make nights easier until the nest is treated.
Another reason for care is that a bedroom is the room where windows are most often left open. A night’s ventilation can bring a surprising number of insects into the room, particularly in July and August.
There is a small seasonal point too: early in the year a young nest above a bedroom is fairly quiet, but by August it is at its peak, and the hum and traffic are much more noticeable.
Windows, curtains and light
Keep the window closest to the nest shut during the day and, if the weather allows, at night too. If you need ventilation, open a window on the opposite side of the house or fit a fine insect mesh over the opening. Draw the curtains before putting the light on, as wasps are drawn to light after dusk.
Check the room before bed. Look at the ceiling, the curtains and the window frame, and take a quick look at bedding and clothing on the floor. If you find a wasp, open a window on the far side of the room and encourage it out, rather than swatting.
Fine mesh is cheap and easy to fit, and it keeps out other insects as well. It is a good idea even after the nest has gone, as wasps can reach bedrooms from nests elsewhere.
If your bedroom has a roof window or a dormer, apply the same advice to it, closing it during the day and fitting mesh if you want to open it.
Sounds and signs
A nest in the soffit above a bedroom can be heard from inside, particularly in warm weather. You may hear a low hum or a faint scratching in the ceiling or the wall. Do not be alarmed, but do report it.
- A faint buzzing from above the window.
- Wasps found in the room in the morning.
- Wasps gathering on the outside of the glass.
- A visible stream of wasps passing the window.
Never open the window and lean out to look. The entrance may be within reach of the sill.
If you work from home in the room, move your desk away from the window for the time being. The hum can be distracting, and the wasps are closer than you would like.
Keep a record of when you notice sounds or wasps in the room. It helps the technician work out the route the wasps are taking from the nest.
Children and light sleepers
If a child’s bedroom is under the nest, consider moving them into another room for a few nights, and let them know why in simple terms. For light sleepers, white noise or a fan can cover the faint hum. Do not hang anything from the window or the gutter above it, and do not attach bird feeders, lights or decorations to the fascia.
If a sting happens, wash the skin, remove any visible sting and hold a cold pack against it. Ring 999 immediately if there is swelling of the lips, face or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash. If a child or adult is known to be allergic, tell us when you book.
Remember the household too: tell relatives or visitors staying overnight, so a guest is not surprised by wasps in the morning.
A calm approach helps a child more than anything else. If they see you checking the room matter-of-factly, they will feel safer.
The visit
A technician serving Stambourne will want to know which room is affected and where the wasps are going. They will assess the entrance from outside, work at height with suitable equipment and protective clothing and treat the nest at its source. You will be asked to keep the window closed, and to keep people out of the room for a short time if it is directly below the work.
Afterwards you may see wasps near the old entrance for a day or two. If any come into the room, open a window on the far side and let them leave.
Please remove anything from the window sill that could be knocked over, and leave the room tidy so the technician can see the wall from the inside if needed.
Pets that sleep in the room should be moved as well, since cats and dogs may snap at wasps at the window.
Cost, booking and repair
Treatment costs a fixed £90 for each nest, and that means one visit guaranteed, with an additional nest on the same property at £35 more. A second nest on the same property costs £35 more. We are open seven days a week, and same-day visits are offered. When you are ready, phone 01245 327274 or send the form on the contact page and give the address and the side of the building the wasps are using.
When the wasps have gone, ask a builder to close the gap above the window, check the soffit and fascia and seal the joint with the wall. A sound repair means you can leave the window open again next summer.
If the gap looks to have been used from the inside, perhaps through a hole in a ceiling or beside a window frame, ask the builder to check that too.
Spring is the time to check the same spot again. A wasp seen investigating the soffit above the window in April or May is worth acting on at once.
