Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Romford? Here's What to Do

When wasps gather round a lamp or a lit window in the evening, the loft above may be where they started, and a few small habits can keep them out of the room.

A surprise after sunset

Wasps are daytime insects, so finding one in the house in the evening can feel odd. Yet it is a common complaint where there is a nest in the loft. You switch on the lamp in a bedroom, close the curtains and, before long, you notice a wasp tapping at the shade or crawling across the ceiling. A couple more appear before bedtime.

The explanation is simple. Wasps from the nest that are still out at dusk head for the brightest thing they can see, and indoors that is your light. Others may be wandering from the loft through small gaps, drawn by warmth and glow into the room beneath.

It does not always mean a large nest, but it does mean you should take the signs seriously. Wasps that show up repeatedly in the same upstairs room in the evening are rarely just passing visitors.

Notice also that evening wasps tend to be fewer and slower, and it is easy to underestimate the problem because of that. A handful at night usually means a considerably greater number by day.

Light, heat and the ceiling

Ceiling lights give off warmth, and a bulb in a fitting set into the ceiling can sit close to the loft space. If there is a gap around the fitting, wasps can use it. Even a pendant light with a loose rose, the plate where the cable meets the ceiling, may have a gap behind it.

Pay attention to which lights draw the wasps. If they always cluster around the same one, it may be near the nest or on a route into the room. Make a note of which room and which light, and mention it when you book.

Do not remove covers or fittings to look. If you are worried about the electrics, leave them alone and speak to a qualified electrician once the nest has been treated.

Recessed spotlights, common in kitchens, bathrooms and landings, are a special case. They sit in holes cut into the ceiling, and the space above them is directly connected to the roof void. If wasps appear near several of them, they may be using the void above as a corridor.

What to do in the evening

A few small habits keep the numbers down while you wait for the visit.

Do not use sprays in the bedroom. They are unlikely to stop a stream of wasps from the ceiling and can make the room unpleasant to sleep in.

If you have outdoor lights near the roof edge, such as a porch lamp or security light, they may also draw wasps close to the nest entrance in the evening. Switching the porch light off for a few nights, if safe to do so, reduces the traffic around the door.

Is it safe to sleep there?

If wasps are coming into the bedroom regularly, it is better to sleep elsewhere until the nest has been dealt with. A wasp in the dark is easy to roll on or to brush against. Check your shoes and clothes in the morning before putting them on.

If anyone at home is allergic to stings, they should certainly not sleep in a room where wasps are appearing. Tell the business about the allergy when you book so that the booking can be prioritised.

A stung person should have the area washed, the sting removed if visible and a cold pack applied. Ring 999 straight away if you see swelling around the face, lips or throat, wheeze, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a spreading rash.

Booking the treatment

Wasp Nest Removal Essex works seven days a week and offers same-day service, covering Romford and the surrounding area, for homes and commercial premises. The cost is simple: a fixed £90 for every nest, with one visit guaranteed. A further nest at the same address is £35 each.

To arrange it, call 01245 327274 or fill in the online booking form on the contact page. Describe where in the house you see wasps after dark, and which lights draw them. The technician can use this to work out where the nest is.

When you speak to the business, say what time of day the wasps come into the room and whether you see them in the afternoon too. That helps the technician to decide on the timing of the work.

Once the nest is treated

After treatment, the evening visitors should stop within a short time. A few stragglers may still appear, and the lights will draw them, so keep curtains closed for a night or two and sweep up any that die.

Check the light fittings and sills for dead wasps, wearing shoes. Check with the technician whether the empty nest can come down. If wasps return in the following days, tell the business what you are seeing, and where.

For next summer, a look at the roof edge in April is a useful habit.

A little patience helps. Treat the first few evenings after the visit as a transition, and do not worry if one or two wasps still appear. Most of them will have been out of the nest when the work took place and will find their way back to nothing, then wander and die off.

Frequently asked questions

Why are wasps coming to my light at night?
Wasps still active at dusk head for bright lights, and wasps from a loft nest may come through small gaps into a lit room.
Should I switch off the light to stop them?
Closing the curtains and using lamps elsewhere helps, but the real answer is to treat the nest. Keep the room door closed meanwhile.
Is it safe to touch the light fitting if wasps are around it?
Leave it alone. If you are concerned about the electrics, ask a qualified electrician after the nest has been treated.
