Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Osea Island Home? Common Causes and Solutions

Glazed rooms warm up quickly and wasps are drawn towards the brightest windows, so a conservatory is often where indoor sightings are most noticeable.

Why glass rooms attract attention

A conservatory or sunroom is bright, warm and full of windows. Wasps that enter any part of the house tend to drift towards the strongest light, so they end up crowded against the glass of the glazed room. Even if the insects came in through a front door, you are likely to find them at the conservatory windows by the afternoon.

The structure itself can also give wasps a way in. Where a lightweight roof meets a house wall, where roof vents sit, or where a frame has been fitted to old brickwork, there may be gaps just wide enough for an insect to pass through. Such joints are also sheltered, which is exactly what a queen looks for when she begins her nest in late April or May.

Orientation plays a part as well. A south-facing glazed room warms first, and a warm room gives off a scent of heated dust and plants that can interest scouts looking for sheltered places to nest.

Working out how they entered

Start by looking at the room on a sunny day, preferably with the door closed. Count the wasps on the glass and watch whether any appear from a particular corner or ridge. Wasps that come from the same place each time are using an opening.

Walk around the outside of the room, keeping a sensible distance, and look for wasps flying to the roof edge, the ridge, the upper corners or the joint with the house. If you see a stream, there may be a nest in the frame or in the cavity just behind the join.

If none of that is happening and the wasps are few, they probably came in through the door when someone moved between rooms. Fruit bowls, drink glasses and pet food are other reasons for them to linger.

Dealing with wasps in the room

Work through these steps with care:

  1. Stay calm and avoid sudden movement near the glass, where wasps are most agitated.
  2. Open an outward-facing window or door as wide as you can, and leave the room for a while so the wasps can find it.
  3. Switch off lights in the rest of the house so that the open door is the brightest exit.
  4. Once the wasps have gone, close the openings and check the room for any that remain.
  5. Do not crush wasps against the glass with a cloth or newspaper.

If one lands on you, stay still until it moves away. Rapid arm movements are the most common reason people get stung.

Small gaps that let them in

Wasps need very little space. A gap beside a window frame where the sealant has cracked, a hole where a cable enters the wall, an air brick without a mesh, or a letterbox that does not close properly can all be enough. Inside a conservatory, the gap under a door or the join around a roof vent may be the passage.

Walk around the room on a calm day and look for light coming through the frame or feel for draughts. These are the gaps through which insects pass as well. Make a list of the gaps but delay the repairs until you are sure no wasps are using them to go in and out, since blocking a live entrance can cause problems.

Take care with opening roof vents on a warm day, since this can invite wasps in at the top of the room, from where they are harder to guide out. A mesh fitted from the inside gives you ventilation with a barrier.

Reducing the draw

Keep food and drink out of the conservatory when you are not using it. Empty plant saucers and clear any spilled sugary drinks. Blinds can reduce the glare that makes wasps cluster on the glass, and a mesh panel in the vent or window opening helps with ventilation.

Check the seals around roof panels and where the frame meets the wall, but do not attempt repairs while wasps are active around them. If wasps are appearing from a gap, leave it alone until the nest has been dealt with, as sealing it traps them inside and can push them towards the room.

If you live alone or have limited mobility, plan the steps before you act. Keep a phone with you, wear closed shoes and long sleeves, and have a clear route to an outside door. Do not climb on chairs or steps to deal with wasps, as a fall causes more harm than a sting.

If you are anxious, close the door on the room and call for help instead of dealing with it yourself. Wasps left alone in a closed room will settle and often leave when the door is opened later.

When the nest needs treating

A colony in the roof of a conservatory or the wall behind it is not something to tackle with a ladder and a spray. The nest may hold from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more by late summer, and you would be working at height and close to the entrance.

Frequently asked questions

Why are all the wasps on my conservatory glass?
Wasps move towards bright light, so any that enter the house usually end up at the sunniest window. It does not mean the nest is in the room.
Can a nest be built in a conservatory roof?
Wasps can nest in gaps in roofs, frames and the joint with the house wall. If wasps appear from the same spot repeatedly, have it checked.
Should I spray the wasps on the glass?
It is safer not to. Sprays make them agitated and can lead to stings, so open the room and let them leave, or arrange for the nest to be treated.
