Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Navestock? Here's What to Do
Sounds from the roof space can have several causes, and the pattern, timing and weather give better clues than the volume alone.
Different noises, different causes
A noise above the ceiling can be unsettling, especially at night. Many things live or move in a roof space. Birds may nest under the eaves. Pipes tick as they warm up. Loose tiles tap in the wind. Animals sometimes find their way in. Wasps are only one possible cause, and they sound quite different from the rest.
The aim is not to diagnose perfectly, but to decide whether wasps are likely so you know whether to call. A few simple questions get you most of the way.
Time of year is a good first filter. Wasp nests are active from spring to early autumn, so a noise heard in January is very unlikely to be wasps. A noise heard on a warm July afternoon is much more likely to be.
Remember too that more than one thing can be going on at once. A house can have birds in the eaves and a wasp nest in the loft in the same season.
If you are still unsure after listening, describe the sound to the person you speak to when you book. They can usually tell from a few details whether it sounds like wasps.
What wasps sound like
A wasp nest is a low, steady hum, sometimes with a faint dry rustle or crackle, like paper being slowly crumpled. It is often loudest in the afternoon on warm days and at its quietest in the night and early morning. You may hear it more clearly when standing directly beneath it, or when the house is quiet.
The hum is continuous and soft rather than sharp or rhythmic. Unlike a trapped single wasp, which buzzes loudly against glass, a nest creates a muffled drone from many insects together.
You might also see wasps appearing in the room, particularly upstairs, or at the window nearest the sound.
Try to listen from different places. Stand in the middle of the landing, then in each bedroom beneath the roof, and pay attention to where the sound is clearest. Where it is loudest is usually closest to the nest. Make a note and pass it on when you book.
Do not hold a glass to the ceiling or press an ear against it; it is unnecessary, and a startled nest can respond to vibration.
Sounds that are not wasps
- Heavy scampering or thumping, often at night, is more typical of larger animals.
- Sharp scratching or gnawing at dusk or night suggests something with claws or teeth.
- Fluttering and chirping, especially in spring and early summer, suggests birds.
- Ticking, knocking or creaking that follows the heating coming on is usually pipes or timbers.
- Rattling in windy weather is often a loose tile or roof fitting.
If your noise fits one of these, wasps are less likely, and a different specialist is needed. Wasp Nest Removal Essex deals with wasps only.
If you suspect animals in the roof space, contact a pest specialist who deals with them. Please do not seal the hole. An animal shut inside will try to chew its way out, which can cause damage to the ceiling and your home.
Using the weather and time of day
Keep a note for a few days. Does the sound change with temperature? Is it quiet on a cool, wet day and busy on a warm, bright one? Wasps follow that pattern closely. Is it heard at the same time each day? Animals tend to move at night, but wasps are daytime creatures.
Compare the evidence indoors and out. Are there wasps at the window? Does a stream of insects go in and out of one gap on the roof edge? If the answers are yes, the case for a wasp nest is strong.
Resist the urge to bang on the ceiling to test the noise. That alarms a nest and brings wasps down.
Cold weather is helpful here. If the sound disappears on a chilly day and returns when the sun comes out, that is the signature of insects, as wasps become sluggish when the temperature drops.
If you think it is wasps
Keep the hatch closed and stay out of the loft. Close doors to rooms with wasps. Phone 01245 327274 or send a booking through the contact page form. Wasp Nest Removal Essex covers Navestock and surrounding villages, works seven days a week and offers same-day service, for homes and commercial premises.
Wasp nest treatment is priced at a flat £90 per nest, with one visit guaranteed whatever the day. A second nest on the same property is £35 for each one. If anyone at home is allergic to wasp stings, tell the business at booking.
It is helpful to describe the sound in your own words when you ring. Phrases such as a humming like a distant fridge, or a papery rustle after lunch, give the technician something to work with.
Afterwards: a quiet ceiling
After treatment the humming should fade over a short time. You may still hear or see a few wasps, but the steady drone should be gone. If the sound carries on unchanged after several days, tell the business what you hear, as it may point to another cause or a second nest.
Dead wasps can be swept or vacuumed up, wearing shoes. Ask the technician whether the empty nest can be removed.
Once the sound is gone, ask a builder to check the roof edge for the gap that let the wasps in. Whether or not it was wasps, a roof void that is open to the outside can be used by many creatures, and sealing it is a worthwhile job.
Keep the hatch closed in the meantime and avoid storing anything edible in the loft, as food can attract other creatures.
