Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Mount Bures Homes

Wasps often use gaps left by tiles that have moved, and spotting them from the ground tells you where an entrance may be.

How tiles end up with gaps

Roof tiles are laid to overlap, and in normal conditions they keep out wind and rain. Over time, some work loose. A gust may lift a tile, a frost may crack one, or a repair may leave a small gap. The result is a narrow opening between a tile and the one beneath, which is exactly the sort of space that wasps like.

You do not need to be a roofer to notice. A row of tiles that is out of line or a dark gap at the edge is often visible from the garden.

Tiles on a pitched roof are held by their weight, by nails or clips and by the overlap with their neighbours. When one of those fails, the tile slips a little. A slipped tile is often invisible from inside, so the first anyone knows of it is when rain or wasps get in.

Tiles are not the only way in, of course. Wasps also use gaps at the ridge, the verge and the eaves. But slipped tiles are among the most common, and the easiest to spot.

Spotting them from the ground

Use binoculars if you have them, and look along each slope of the roof. Face the house in good light, and take your time.

If you see the last one, you have probably found the entrance. Mark it in your mind or on a photograph taken from a distance.

Compare each slope of the roof with the others. The side that faces the strongest wind or the most sun is often the one with most movement. The gaps created by thermal movement are small but can be enough for an insect to pass.

If you have a pair of binoculars, use them in the late afternoon or at midday when the shadows make gaps stand out. A dark line beneath a tile is easiest to see when the sun is at an angle.

Keep your distance even with binoculars. If wasps are close to the area you are inspecting, they are best left alone.

Why not fix it straight away

It is natural to want to fix the gap at once. But if wasps are already inside, you will be sealing them in, and a sealed colony looks for another way out. That can be into the loft, down a wall and into a room.

Equally, moving or replacing a tile near a live nest is hazardous. The vibration alone can bring wasps out, and you would be standing on a ladder or the roof itself. Leave it to a roofer, and only when the nest is inactive.

A further reason to wait is that a loosened tile can slide. Tampering with it from a ladder risks sending it down on you or someone below. A roofer has the tools and the training to handle this safely.

Another point is that a tile that has slipped by a small amount may look fine from a distance. This is why watching the wasps tells you more than inspecting the roof.

Roofers often see tiles that have been moved by a previous owner or by an earlier repair. If you know of one, mention it to the technician and later to the roofer.

Tell the technician

When you book, say which slope of the roof and which area you suspect. If you have noticed damaged tiles, mention it. It helps the technician to find the entrance quickly and decide on the safest approach.

The cost of dealing with a nest is a set £90 and one visit is guaranteed. For another nest at the same property, that nest is charged at £35 more. Wasp Nest Removal Essex is open every day of the week, and same-day service is available, and the work is fully insured for domestic and commercial customers.

Arrange a visit on 01245 327274 or book through the contact page form. A technician covers Mount Bures and the surrounding villages. Say if anyone in the household is allergic to stings so that the booking can be prioritised.

If you find more than one suspicious area, list them all. The technician can then check each one on arrival, and any later repair will be more complete.

Repairs once it is safe

After the nest has been dealt with and is no longer active, ask a roofer to replace or reseat the tile. They may also check others nearby, since loose tiles often come in groups. Ask for a clear explanation of the work before agreeing.

You can also ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down, and whether they noticed anything else at the roof edge.

If you can, keep a note of the number of tiles in the area that look odd. A short list helps the roofer to give a more accurate quote.

Keeping an eye on the roof

After strong winds, take a quick look at the roof from the ground. If you see a tile out of place, note it and have it repaired soon. It reduces the chance of rain getting in as well as wasps.

A roof that is checked once or twice a year is rarely a surprise. The few minutes involved are well spent.

Make a habit of looking up after any storm or strong wind.

Your own photographs, taken from the ground over the years, are a record of how the roof has changed.

Frequently asked questions

Can wasps get under tiles that look intact?
Yes. A very small gap at the edge of a tile can be enough, which is why watching the flight line is more reliable than looking for damage.
Should I get a roofer before the technician?
No. Have the nest treated first, then the roofer can repair the gap safely.
Will insurance cover tile repairs?
That depends on your policy. Check it or ask your insurer.
