Are Wasps Dangerous? Understanding Stings and Nest Disturbance in Kirby-le-Soken

A sting inside the mouth is one of the few wasp encounters that is genuinely urgent, and it almost always comes from a drink or a bite of food.

Why drinks are the problem

Cans, bottles and half-finished glasses are irresistible to a thirsty wasp. They are sweet, often warm and sticky around the rim. A wasp crawls in through the opening, and from the outside you see nothing at all. You lift the can, take a mouthful and feel a sharp pain on your lip, tongue or the back of your mouth.

Stings in the mouth are rare but they matter for a simple reason. The tissues of the mouth and throat swell, and swelling there can narrow the airway. A sting on the arm swells in the arm; a sting on the tongue can swell in a way that interferes with breathing.

That is why prevention and a clear plan are worth the effort, and why this is one of the few wasp problems where waiting to see what happens is not an option.

Parents of toddlers should be especially watchful. A small child can pick up a half-finished drink or a dropped lolly without looking, and cannot tell you what is happening if they are stung. Keep a close eye on anything sweet within reach.

How to avoid it

A few habits remove most of the risk.

At barbecues, put drinks out in jugs with lids, and keep cans in a cool bag until needed. A wasp cannot enter a cold, closed cooler.

Outdoor events, such as fetes, sports days and village gatherings, often have lots of cans and cups. Organisers can help by providing covered containers and lidded bins for rubbish.

If someone is stung in the mouth

Treat it as an emergency. Do not wait to see how it develops.

  1. Call 999, even if the person seems well, and say it is a sting in the mouth or throat.
  2. Keep them sitting upright and calm. Do not give food or drink.
  3. Stay with them and watch their breathing.
  4. If they have prescribed emergency medication, help them use it as instructed.
  5. A cold pack or sucking on ice, if they can do so safely, may ease pain, but emergency help comes first.

Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash are all signs of a serious reaction. This is general information, not medical advice, and when in doubt the right step is to call.

If you do see a wasp inside a can or cup, do not shake it or throw it. Place the container down gently, step away and leave it for the wasp to leave, or bin the whole thing at arm's length.

Other places wasps hide

Drinks are not the only hidden hazard. Wasps can land on a sandwich, burrow into an apple or sit in the foil of an ice cream tub. A sting on the lip or in the mouth may come from any of these.

Pay attention to food that has been left out for even a short time. Break fruit open and look. Check sandwiches and cakes before eating, particularly in the second half of summer. Children have trouble spotting the problem, so an adult should check food for the smallest.

Wasps can also crawl inside clothing, bags and shoes. Shake out towels, hats and trainers kept outside.

People who have had a strong reaction before should be extremely careful with open drinks outdoors. Sticking to a lidded bottle with a sports cap, or a cup with a straw they can see through, is a simple precaution.

Ordinary stings and aftercare

For stings elsewhere on the body, the usual steps apply. Move away, wash the area, remove any visible sting and apply a cold pack. Keep the person under observation for a while after that.

Call 999 for the signs above. People with known allergies should speak to their GP in advance and carry any prescribed medicine.

If stings keep happening in the same part of the garden, there may be a nest. By August a nest can hold 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps, which explains the crowds at your table. Look from a distance for traffic to and from one spot.

If you are ever unsure whether a sting was inside the mouth, take it seriously. Mouth swelling can develop over a short time, so stay with the person and be ready to call for help.

Dealing with the nest

If a nest is the cause of the wasp crowds, treatment removes the source. You pay a single fixed price of £90 for every nest, with one visit guaranteed. Another nest on the same property is £35 more. The service runs seven days a week, and same-day service is offered, and the work is fully insured.

Getting a visit arranged is simple: ringing 01245 327274 or else completing the booking form found on the contact page. Say if anyone is allergic. The technician covers Kirby-le-Soken and nearby villages, and you can ask whether the empty nest can be taken down.

Cafe and kitchen staff, and anyone serving drinks outdoors, deserve a mention. A wasp in a jug of squash or a pint glass left on a table is easily missed in a busy service. Wash and cover serving equipment, clear glasses quickly, and train everyone handling drinks to look before they pour.

Frequently asked questions

What if I think I swallowed a wasp?
Do not wait. If you have any swelling, pain in the throat or trouble breathing, call 999 or get urgent help.
Are canned drinks the main risk?
They are a common one because the opening is hard to see into. Pouring into a glass removes the risk.
Is ice good for a sting in the mouth?
It may ease discomfort, but it is no substitute for emergency help. Call 999 first.
