How to Tell If You Have an Active Wasp Nest on Your Kelvedon Hatch Property

Decking, patios, steps and raised beds create dark, dry voids at ground level, and a colony underneath them can go unnoticed until someone walks across the top.

The void under your feet

Garden landscaping often creates spaces by accident. Timber decking sits on joists with a gap beneath it. Patio slabs are laid on a bed that can settle and leave cavities. Steps, retaining walls and raised beds have hollows behind them. For a queen wasp in spring, these places are ideal: dry, shaded, protected from rain and close to the ground.

Because they are below the surface, nests in these spaces are rarely seen. The first sign is usually wasps going in and out of a crack, a gap between boards or a hole at the edge of a slab, and the second is often a sting for somebody who has stepped on or near it.

Where to look

Sit or stand well back and scan the edges of the structure rather than the top. The wasps will be using an entrance, and those are usually at the margins or along gaps.

On a warm day, a steady line of wasps going into one of these places gives the game away. A faint hum you can feel through the boards is another sign.

Think about when the structure was built. Newer decking often has ventilation gaps or open sides to prevent rot, and these are very convenient for wasps. Older patios may have subsided and left larger voids beneath slabs. Neither is unusual or the result of poor workmanship; it is simply how these structures behave over time. If your decking is raised more than a hand’s width above the ground, assume there is a space beneath it.

The edges of lawns are also worth a look, where the turf meets the patio. Wasps sometimes use the soft ground there to reach a void beneath the paving, so a small hole in the grass beside a slab may be a nest entrance.

The risk of treading on a nest

Walking, stamping or dragging furniture across the surface produces vibrations that carry down into the void. A colony underneath will treat that as a threat, and wasps may come out in force. Barbecues, parties and children running on the patio are the usual situations in which stings happen.

If you suspect a nest, treat the whole structure as off limits. Move furniture and barbecue equipment away carefully, if that can be done without walking across the suspect area, or simply leave them. Keep dogs on a lead when outside, since they will explore edges and holes with their noses.

It is worth treating a quiet patio with some suspicion if you had wasps around the table earlier in the summer and they have increased. Meals outdoors involve food, and wasps visiting the table might have come from anywhere. But if you notice them heading towards the same corner of the patio when they leave, the nest may be underneath.

Watch also for activity after rain. A nest in a dry void continues as normal, while wasps may become more noticeable as they emerge to forage when the sun returns. A steady stream after a wet spell, from one gap, is a strong indication.

Things that mimic the signs

Ants are the great imitators in this setting. Patios and steps often have ant nests, and ants will emerge from cracks in numbers too. They are small, dark and move in trails along the ground. Wasps are much larger, fly, and have a distinctive yellow and black pattern. If the insects at the gap are flying in and out, they are not ants.

Solitary bees may also dig small holes in sandy soil beside paths, but they appear as scattered individuals and not as a stream. If you believe you have bees, contact a beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation instead.

Do not pour, block or lift

Pouring water, bleach or other liquids into a hole is a common reaction, and it nearly always makes matters worse. Lifting a slab or a board to look underneath is even more dangerous, as it exposes the nest directly. Blocking the hole forces wasps to look for other exits, which may be in the wrong place.

Instead, mark the spot in your mind, tell the family, and leave it alone. A temporary barrier such as a row of plant pots placed at a distance can discourage children from wandering across, without involving contact with the nest area itself.

If you have already been stung while walking on the structure, mark the spot and keep everyone off it. Wash the sting, remove it if visible and apply a cold pack. Do not go back to see what happened. A colony will stay agitated for some time after a disturbance, and wasps may still be around the entrance.

For businesses with outdoor seating, such as a cafe terrace or a pub garden on a deck, close the area and tell staff and customers. Make a note of the date and the action taken, and arrange treatment as soon as you can.

Frequently asked questions

Can wasps really nest under decking?
Yes. The gap beneath decking is dry, shaded and rarely disturbed, so it suits a nesting queen.
Should I lift a board to see what is underneath?
No. Lifting a board exposes the nest and is likely to cause a swarm. Leave it and book a treatment.
How can I tell wasps from ants coming out of a patio crack?
Ants are small, dark and walk along the ground. Wasps are larger, yellow and black, and fly in and out of the gap.
