Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Heybridge Garden Owners Should Know

The corner beside the shed, the one nobody looks at, is where many nests are found, and the lawn mower is usually what finds them first.

The corner nobody visits

Every garden has a spot that gets cut once a month and ignored in between: the corner behind the shed, the narrow gap beside a fence, the shrub that has grown too big. Wasps like these places because there is shelter, little traffic and plenty of stems and soil to build in.

By midsummer the colony can be large, and the next time you push the mower round the corner you are suddenly in the middle of it.

Piles of clippings, old pots and stacked timber in these corners add to the appeal, because they give the wasps more places to tuck into. If you tidy such a corner, do it only after you have been round it from a distance and confirmed that no wasps are using it.

Why mowers and strimmers cause trouble

The engine noise and vibration of a mower carry through the ground and into the plants. Wasps guarding a nest at the base of a shrub treat that as a threat and rush out together. Strimmers are worse because the operator is closer to the entrance and wearing little protection on the legs.

If you notice a handful of wasps circling you as you work near a shrub, stop the machine and walk away, even if you cannot see a nest. It is better to lose a few minutes than to be surrounded.

Different machines carry different risks. A rotary mower is loud but you stand some way behind it; a petrol strimmer puts the cutting head, and your legs, right at the base of the plant; a hedge trimmer puts your arms and face among the leaves. The closer you work to a nest, the less time you have to react.

A short walk-round before each cut

Get into the habit of a quick check before you start the machine, especially from late spring to early autumn:

  1. Walk the edges of the lawn and the base of any shrubs.
  2. Look for wasps rising from the soil or flying out of the foliage.
  3. Listen for a faint hum from a bush or a hedge.
  4. Check low gaps beside the shed and any pile of cuttings.
  5. If anything looks busy, cut a different area and leave that corner.

This takes a couple of minutes and can spare you a hospital trip.

Make sure children are not left to play on the lawn while you cut, and keep the dog indoors. If you use a ride-on mower, stop immediately if you hear a change in the noise of the engine or see wasps rising ahead of you, and reverse out calmly rather than driving on.

After a sting near the shrub

Move away from the spot first, then deal with the sting. Wash the area with water, remove the sting if you can see it, and put a cold pack on the skin. Watch the person for the next while.

If there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999. Anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP about it ahead of time.

Leave the mower where it stopped. It can be fetched when the wasps are no longer active, and the technician can tell you when that is.

Hold off on putting ice or cold treatments on a swelling that is spreading across the face or throat; that is a time to ring 999. For a standard local sting, the cold pack is enough, and it helps to elevate a stung hand or foot and avoid scratching.

Getting it dealt with

Wasp Nest Removal Essex covers Heybridge and surrounding villages. A nest costs £90 to treat, with one visit guaranteed, and any further nest on the same property is just £35 extra. We are open seven days a week and can often visit the same day. The work is fully insured and available to homeowners and businesses.

Ring 01245 327274 or use the booking form on the contact page. Let us know where the nest is likely to be and if there is anything that makes access awkward, such as a locked side gate. Allergic family members should be mentioned when you book.

Make life easy for the technician by clearing a route to the shed corner and moving any items that block it. If the nest is hidden behind a pile of cuttings or old pots, do not move them yourself. Say so, and let the technician decide how to approach it.

When the treatment is done, ask when it is fine to resume cutting that corner. It is also a good moment to clear out clutter that provides cover, once the technician says it is safe.

Edges, fences and the low-hanging branch

It is not only the shed corner that is worth checking. Look along the fence line where shrubs push through, under low branches, and at the base of any evergreen that has become overgrown. A wasp colony needs only a sheltered gap, and a heavy branch that sweeps the ground makes an ideal roof.

When you find such a spot, mark it in your mind and keep a record of when you saw activity. If you ever need to describe it to a technician, a clear description such as “behind the shed, under the large shrub, entrance at the base” is worth far more than a vague guess.

Once the nest has been treated, you can cut back the overgrowth and open up the corner so it is less inviting in future. A tidier garden does not guarantee that wasps will not return, but it does make early warning signs far easier to see.

Frequently asked questions

Should I mow around the shrub and leave the nest area?
No. Even mowing nearby can set the colony off. Leave the area completely until it has been treated.
What if I only see two or three wasps near the shed?
A few foragers may be harmless, but if they come and go from the same spot it points to a nest. Watch from a distance for a few minutes.
Is it safe to bag up the grass cuttings I already collected?
Check the bag and pile from a distance first. If wasps are around it, leave it alone until the technician has visited.
