Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Hawkwell? Here's What to Do

Before booking, it helps to know what you are dealing with, because wasps, bees and ants need different responses and only wasps are treated here.

Three insects, three different problems

People often use the word wasp for anything that flies and stings. In a loft, though, there are three common candidates: wasps, bees and flying ants. Each behaves differently, and the right response depends on which one you have.

Wasp Nest Removal Essex treats wasp nests. It does not treat bees or other pests, so identifying correctly saves time and avoids an unnecessary visit.

You do not need to be an expert. A few simple observations from a safe distance usually settle the question.

Mistaking one for another is easy. A bumblebee in a loft can look alarming, and a cluster of flying ants on a warm evening can seem like an invasion. Taking a minute to look properly gives you the best chance of choosing the right response.

How to recognise wasps

Wasps are slim with a narrow waist, bright yellow and black stripes and smooth bodies with little visible hair. They fly fast and directly, and they are drawn to sweet food and meat in summer. They build nests from a grey, papery material that they make by chewing wood.

If you can see a grey, paper-like structure, that points to wasps. Do not go into the loft to look; a view from outside is enough.

Watch the behaviour too. Wasps patrol around bins, jam and fizzy drinks, and in late summer they become more persistent as the colony runs out of grubs to feed. If you find yourself being pestered at a picnic table in August, wasps are the likeliest cause.

How bees differ

Honeybees and bumblebees are rounder and furrier, with a softer, golden or brown look. They move more slowly and heavily, and they visit flowers, not food or bins. A honeybee swarm may cluster in a roof space, and bumblebees often nest in a small, untidy ball of moss and grass.

Bees are valuable to the environment. We do not treat bees. If you think you have honeybees or bumblebees, contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation. Please do not spray them or block the entrance.

If you are not sure, take a clear photo from a distance, or describe the insects to the person you speak to when you call.

Honeybees are often busiest at flowering shrubs, and a small cluster or swarm on a wall may be a passing group. A beekeeper can often collect a swarm, so ask for help and keep your distance until they arrive.

And flying ants

Flying ants are winged ants that appear in large numbers on warm days, usually for a short spell in summer. They are dark, thin and clumsy flyers, with two pairs of wings of similar length. They seem to arrive all at once, then vanish within a day or so.

They are not wasps, and they do not form a papery nest in the roof. They can appear in houses, around windows and in the loft, but the cause is an ant colony somewhere nearby. They are not treated by this business.

If the insects you see are small, dark and numerous for a day or two and then disappear, you most likely have ants and not wasps.

Ants in the loft are sometimes drawn by damp or by spilled food from stored boxes, so a check of anything edible kept up there is worth doing once the insects are gone.

If it is wasps

If the clues point to wasps, do not delay. Keep the hatch closed, stay out of the loft, and avoid blocking or spraying at the roof edge. You can call 01245 327274 or use the form on the contact page.

Wasp Nest Removal Essex works seven days a week, offers same-day service and covers Hawkwell and the surrounding villages for homes and commercial premises. The price is a fixed £90 per nest, with one visit guaranteed, and £35 for a further nest on the same property. If anyone at home is allergic to stings, tell the business so that the booking can be prioritised.

Do not wait for a wasp nest to grow in the hope that it will go away by itself. Colonies do die off in the autumn, but until then they keep growing, and a nest in a loft can cause weeks of trouble before the season ends. Acting early is kinder to everybody in the house.

A quick checklist before you call

  1. Do the insects have a narrow waist and yellow and black stripes?
  2. Is there a grey papery structure or a small hole with a steady flow of insects?
  3. Are they attracted to sweet food or drinks?
  4. Is the noise from the roof louder in warm weather?
  5. Have you kept the hatch closed and stayed out of the loft?

If you answered yes to most of these, a wasp nest is likely. If the insects are furry and gentle, or tiny and dark, speak to the appropriate specialist.

Once any wasp nest has been treated, sweep up dead wasps carefully, wearing shoes, and ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down.

None of these checks require you to touch or approach anything. If you are still uncertain, describe what you saw when you call, including colour, size, flight pattern and what time of day it was, and the person on the phone can help you work out what to do next.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a wasp from a bee?
Wasps are slim, smooth and brightly striped, while bees are rounder and furrier. Bees also visit flowers rather than your food and drinks.
Do you treat bees?
No. For honeybees or bumblebees, contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation. Do not spray them or block their entrance.
Could the insects in my loft be flying ants?
Flying ants are small, dark and appear in large numbers for a day or two. They do not build papery nests, so they are a different problem from wasps.
