How Long Does Professional Wasp Nest Treatment Take in Great Bentley?

After a nest is treated you may find wasps on windowsills, paths and floors, and it helps to know what is normal and how to deal with them.

What you might find

A day after the visit, it is common to find a scattering of dead or sluggish wasps near the nest. They may be on a windowsill, a patio, a flat roof or the floor of a shed. Some will be motionless, some twitching, and some crawling slowly.

This is a normal part of the process, not a sign that something has gone wrong. Wasps that were affected as they returned to the treated nest often fall near it, and the numbers usually tell you the nest is settling.

In Great Bentley, as elsewhere, the sight can be unsettling, but it generally means the colony is declining rather than recovering.

Some people expect the wasps to vanish without a trace, and are surprised to find evidence of them. In practice, finding a few bodies is a sign that the process is under way. Do not assume that no bodies means failure, either; many wasps die inside the nest and never appear.

The best measure is activity, not corpses.

Why not to handle them with bare hands

A wasp that looks dead can still sting. Reflex movements and a sluggish insect that is not quite finished can both catch you out. Never pick one up with bare fingers, and do not let children collect them out of curiosity.

If you are unsure whether the insects are still alive, wait a little and clear them later.

Children are often the ones who find the first dead wasp and want to pick it up. Explain, in a simple way, that a wasp can still sting even when it seems dead, and that the grown-ups will tidy up. A clear rule works better than a long explanation.

Pets can be a bigger problem than children. Dogs eat anything on the ground, and a wasp sting in the mouth or throat is serious. Keep dogs on a lead near the nest area for a day or two, and call a vet if a pet is stung in the mouth.

Where wasps turn up indoors

Sometimes affected wasps appear inside, on a windowsill, on a bedroom floor or in a bath. If this happens, treat them with the same caution. Open a window, scoop them gently with a card and a cup, or sweep them up with a brush.

Do not squash a wasp with bare skin or a cloth held loosely. A crushed wasp can still sting. Do not use anything on the nest itself to speed things up.

If many wasps are coming indoors, tell the business, as that may mean they have a route through the building.

Check that the gaps around the window frames and doors are not letting wasps in. A line of daylight under a door or a split in a seal can be enough. Draught excluders, a rolled towel or simply closing the door will help in the short term.

Vents and extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms can also let wasps in. If a fan is on the nest side, switch it off for a day or two if you can.

How long the clean-up lasts

You will often be sweeping up for a day or two, with the numbers falling each day. It is wise to tidy twice a day at first, then once, then only when you see something. Sweeping them away early stops others being attracted to them and stops children finding them.

  1. Day of the visit: expect some, and clear them with care.
  2. Next day: fewer, mostly near the nest.
  3. Day after: very few or none.
  4. After that: report any that keep appearing.

Windowsills collect wasps that have been trying to get out of a room, and the sight of several on a sill is a common one. Sweep them up with gloves, and check the window frames for gaps where wasps may be getting in.

If you are tidying a conservatory, shed or porch, move slowly and look before you reach.

What the empty nest tells you

If the nest is visible, it may look dull and still. Do not knock it down, and do not assume it is empty. Ask the technician at booking whether the empty nest can be removed, and wait until you hear.

A trail of dead wasps does not mean you should block the entrance. Wasps are still using it for a time, and a block can send others into the house.

Leave a few days between the treatment and any big clear-out of the nest area. Dead wasps can lie in leaf litter, under shrubs and in gutters, and a sudden clear-out can disturb a live one. Wear gloves, long sleeves and closed shoes if you must.

When to call

If wasps are still flying in numbers after a couple of days, or you keep finding them indoors, ring the business. Remember what the price graphic says: “1 visit guaranteed”.

Opening is seven days a week, same-day service is offered and the work is fully insured, whether the property is a home or a business. The fee is £90 per nest, with £35 for an additional nest.

Do not feel embarrassed to ring about what seems a small matter. Wasps indoors, or a pile of bodies that keeps growing, are reasonable things to report.

If you have not seen any dead wasps at all, that is not a worry either. Many die inside the nest or in the cavity around it, and you may never see them. What counts is that the traffic at the entrance falls over a day or two, not what you find on the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Are dead wasps a danger to pets?
Keep pets away from them. A wasp can sting even when it appears dead, and pets may try to eat them.
How should I dispose of the wasps?
Sweep them into a bag wearing gloves and put the bag in an outside bin.
Is it normal to find wasps indoors after treatment?
A few can happen. Open a window and avoid swatting; if many appear, tell the business.
