Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Elmdon

When the nest is at the front of the house, the problem spreads beyond the family to deliveries, callers and passers-by, so a few small steps make a real difference.

The most public part of the house

A back-garden nest troubles the household. A nest at the front, above the door or beside the porch, troubles everyone who comes to the door. Postal workers, delivery drivers, carers, friends, children arriving for a party and neighbours walking past are all in the wasps’ flight path, and none of them knows the nest is there.

It is also the entrance the household uses most. Going in and out all day means more chances of a disturbance, and a slammed door sends vibration straight into the wall where the nest sits.

Commercial premises have the same problem in a larger form. A nest above a shop or office door puts customers, staff and suppliers at risk, and the entrance may need to be closed or redirected until it is treated.

Weather also matters: dry, warm afternoons make the front of the house busier with people sitting out, washing cars and meeting neighbours, and every one of them is within reach of the nest.

Using another door

If you can, use the back or side door until the nest is treated. Put a polite note on the front door telling callers to use the other entrance or ring the bell from the path. A short, calm notice is better than a long explanation, and it keeps people away from the wall.

If you must use the front door, move slowly, avoid slamming and do not linger under the eaves. Leave the door closed behind you quickly so wasps do not follow you in. Keep a doormat and shoes away from the threshold if wasps are landing there.

Hanging baskets, wreaths and doorstep planters can attract wasps, particularly if they are sweet-smelling. Move them away from the door for now.

If you have a porch light, remember that it attracts wasps in the evening. Turn it off if a nest is directly overhead and use another light.

Think about how the household will manage in the meantime: shopping bags, pushchairs and wheelchairs are all awkward to carry round to a side gate, so plan the route and clear it of obstacles.

Telling deliveries and visitors

Tell regular visitors by phone that a nest is being dealt with. Ask delivery drivers to leave parcels at the gate or with a neighbour. A box on a table at the end of the path is easy for everyone.

Be particularly careful with children who may arrive at the door, and with anyone who may react badly to a sting. If you are expecting a carer or a trades visit, let them know in advance.

It is a good idea to tell a close neighbour. They may see wasps on their side or hear the buzzing and wonder about it, and a heads-up avoids worry.

Consider whether a sign at the gate is helpful. Something short such as “Wasps at the front door, please use the side gate” tells visitors what they need to know.

What to look for from the path

From a place on the path or the lawn, well back from the door, watch the porch roof, the top of the door frame and the gutter above. Wasps may enter at the corner where the porch meets the wall, behind the fascia of the canopy or in the soffit beneath the eaves.

Do not stand in the doorway to look up, and do not reach up to feel the board. If you see wasps going into a gap, take a photo from a distance and note the position.

If a letterbox is directly beneath the nest, ask post to be held at a sorting office or collected until the visit.

Do not stand on a step or chair to look closely. A porch roof can be low enough to reach, but the nest entrance is exactly where your face would be.

If there is a doorbell or a camera fixed beside the door, leave it alone. Fiddling with fixtures within a metre or so of the nest is the sort of small disturbance that sets wasps off.

Treatment

The technician serving Elmdon will confirm the entrance and treat the nest at its source, with suitable access and protective clothing. They will ask you to keep the front door shut and the area clear for a while, and to use another route. If anyone in the household is allergic to stings, tell us when you book so that the visit can be prioritised.

If you are curious about taking the empty nest down, raise it when you book.

Please clear the area around the front door before the visit: bins, shoes, bikes and plant pots all get in the way of equipment.

Technicians are used to working at entrances, but they can only do it when the area is clear. If a neighbour has a shared path or access, let them know the time.

Repair, cost and booking

When the wasps have gone, have the porch or canopy repaired so the gap is closed. A neat repair also keeps the front of the house looking tidy. The fee is £90 per nest, fixed, with one visit guaranteed, plus £35 more for any further nest on the same property. Bookings are taken seven days a week, so same-day service is offered where possible. For a quote or a booking, call 01245 327274 or send the form on the contact page and describe what you have seen.

Treat as an emergency and call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or wheezing, dizziness, or a rash spreading over the body.

Once the work is done, wait for the all-clear before returning to the front door. A few stragglers can hang around for a day or two.

In spring, glance up at the porch whenever you come home. Early wasps often investigate the same spots they used before.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using the front door?
It is better to use another door until the nest is treated. If you must use it, move calmly and avoid slamming.
What should I tell the postal worker?
A note on the door asking for deliveries to be left at the gate or with a neighbour is enough.
Is a nest above the door more dangerous than one elsewhere?
It is more of a nuisance because more people pass it. Keep everyone away from the wall until it is treated.
