Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Dedham
Before ringing about a nest at the gutter or fascia, most people want to know the same few things: what it costs, what is covered, what happens and what to do first.
How much does it cost?
The price is a fixed £90 per nest, and the service comes with one visit guaranteed. If there is a second nest on the same property, that is £35 more. The price does not change with the position of the nest or the time of day. If you want a quote or to book, you can phone or use the booking form.
It helps to know how many nests you think there are, but you do not need to be certain. Tell us what you have seen, and the technician will check.
Some people ask whether it is worth waiting until the nest becomes a bigger nuisance. A nest grows through the summer, with the colony peaking in August, so waiting generally makes the situation more difficult, not easier.
Many people also ask what to expect from the price when the situation looks complicated. It makes no difference how awkward the position is: the amount is the same, and you will be told before the technician starts what is being treated.
Your question may be a different one, and that is fine. If it is not answered here, ask when you ring.
Who is covered?
We treat wasp nests at both domestic and commercial properties. That includes houses, flats, shops, offices and outbuildings, wherever the roofline gives wasps a way in. The work is fully insured. We are open seven days a week, and same-day service is offered.
We treat wasps only. If what you have is a honeybee or bumblebee colony, please contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation instead.
The service covers wasp nests in eaves, fascias, soffits, walls, chimneys, trees, bushes and holes in the ground. If you are not sure where the nest is, say where you have seen the wasps and let the technician find it.
People sometimes worry that a small nest will not be worth a visit. It is. A nest found early in the season is just as welcome as one found late, and is easier to deal with.
What do you need from me?
Not much. It helps to know which side of the building the wasps are on, roughly how high up, and what feature of the roofline is closest, such as a gutter bracket, a board end or a soffit. A photo taken from a distance is useful, but not essential.
Tell us about anyone in the household who is allergic to stings, so the booking can be prioritised. Tell us about pets and small children, and about any gate or lock that might delay access.
If you are booking for a business, tell us the opening hours and who will meet the technician. For a rented property, check who is responsible under the tenancy agreement or lease, since we cannot advise on that.
You do not need to find the nest yourself, and you should not try to. Even a vague description such as “wasps over the back door” is enough for the technician to start with.
If you need a booking for a particular day, say so on the phone or the form. We cover seven days a week, and same-day service is offered, so urgent cases are welcome.
What happens when the technician arrives?
They will ask where you have seen the wasps, check the roofline for the entrance and set up suitable access equipment. They wear protective clothing and treat the nest at its source. You will be told what to expect afterwards, including that a few wasps may return to the old entrance for a day or two.
You do not need to do anything dangerous. Stay indoors, keep windows on that side shut and keep children and pets away until the technician says it is clear.
The visit is as short and as undramatic as the technician can make it. Questions are welcome, and you can ask the technician anything about what you are seeing.
Afterwards, the technician will tell you how to tell whether everything has settled. Activity falls over the following day or so. If it does not, contact us.
Can I do anything myself first?
Only the safe things. Watch the roofline from a distance, make notes and take photos, keep people and pets away and cover food and bins. Do not climb a ladder, block the gap, spray anything or knock the board. Those actions make the nest more defensive and put you at risk.
Should someone be stung, wash the area, scrape the sting out if it is still in the skin and use a cold pack. Call 999 straight away for facial, lip or throat swelling, wheezing, dizziness or a rash across the body.
If a nest is above a door, window or balcony, or if the building is tall, mention it. Those details affect the equipment, and the more the technician knows in advance, the smoother the visit.
It helps to keep a record of what was done and when, in case the gap needs a repair or the wasps return next year.
How do I book?
To set up a visit, call 01245 327274 or send the booking form on our contact page. A technician covers Dedham and the surrounding villages. After the visit, arrange for the gap to be repaired, so a new founding wasp cannot use it next spring. If you want to ask whether the empty nest can be taken down, mention it when you book.
Many people find it useful to read through these answers once more before the call, so they know what to say. The call itself is short, and the technician will ask only what is needed to arrange the visit.
If you are unsure about anything, ask. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to wasps at the roofline, because small details such as the height or the material of the board can make a real difference to the way the visit is planned.
