Wasp Nest in Your Garden Shed? Safe Treatment Options in Bobbingworth
A large outbuilding used for a caravan, boat or trailer sees little use in winter and plenty of attention in spring, exactly when the first wasps are looking for somewhere to settle.
A quiet building waiting for the season
Many people keep a caravan, a boat, a trailer or a motorbike in an outbuilding over the winter. The door stays closed for months, the building is dry, and nothing disturbs it. When spring arrives, you suddenly want to get the vehicle out for a trip or a service, and that is the moment you discover someone else has moved in.
Wasps start nests from late April depending on the weather. Wasps look for a sheltered cavity, and a large, undisturbed building offers many. The roof void, the gap behind a stack of tyres and the space under a tarpaulin can all serve.
By the time you take the caravan out in June or July, the colony may already be sizeable. By August, a nest can hold 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps.
A building like this often has more than one way in: a roller door, a side door, a loft hatch, a hole where a pipe goes through the wall. Wasps need only one gap. It may be at ground level behind a stack of timber, or high up where the roof meets the wall plate. Once you have seen the entrance, note its position relative to the main door, because the technician will want to know.
Checking before you open up for the season
Before you swing the big doors open, take a minute to look from outside.
- Walk the outside of the building and check the eaves, roof sheets and any gaps around the doors.
- Watch for wasps flying in and out of a gap in the sheeting or beside a roller door.
- Listen for a hum from within, especially on a warm day.
- Look through any window or gap at the door for wasps on the glass or the floor.
- Keep a distance of several metres while you do this.
If you see traffic, do not open the doors. The vibration of a roller door or a heavy swing door can set off a colony. Leave everything as it is.
Do not forget to check the ground outside. A nest in the soil beside a concrete apron or at the foot of the wall can be mistaken for a nest in the building. Look for a small hole with traffic. If there is a stack of old pallets, tyres or timber near the wall, treat it with suspicion as well, and keep well away.
The trip you wanted to make
Of course, a delay to your plans is frustrating, especially if you had a weekend away booked. Talk through the options. Treatment can be arranged promptly with a same-day service where possible, and you can then collect the vehicle once it is safe. If your trip is more than a day or two away, you may find you have time to spare.
Do not be tempted to open the doors just enough to roll the vehicle out. A caravan or boat is bulky, you will be close to the opening for a while, and the noise of towing equipment will not help. If you have a tow car, keep it away from the building as well.
Keep a note of any bookings you may need to rearrange, and tell friends or family who were due to travel with you.

Speak to the team on 01245 327274 or fill in the online booking form on the contact page. Say that the building is used for storage, describe the doors and the access, and note where the wasps are entering. If the building is on a track, give clear directions. If anyone in the household is allergic to stings, say so at booking so it can be prioritised.
Looking after the stored gear
Once the wasps are gone, take a careful look at the vehicle and equipment. Look under tarpaulins, inside wheel arches and behind panels. Wasps can build small nests in unexpected places, and a few may hide in folds of fabric.
Take out and shake awnings, boat covers and bags. Wipe and air cushions. If anything has become damp or marked, deal with it before the season starts. Check vents and drain holes, which can be used by wasps as an entry point.
Tell the technician at booking if there is something delicate in the building that they should know about. And if you want the empty nest taken down, ask whether that can be done.
Storing vehicles so wasps find less to like
A tidy store is a less attractive one. Keep gear off the floor and away from walls. Use sealed plastic boxes for cushions and covers. Leave a clear gap between the vehicle and the wall, so you can walk round it and look.
Check the roof sheets and fixings each autumn, when you put the vehicle away, and fill any gaps with sealant or mesh. Make a note to look at the building in April, before the season begins, and again every couple of weeks until September.
If you rent the space to someone else, tell them what you find. A shared barn or yard needs a shared habit of vigilance.
When you bring the vehicle in at the end of the season, wipe off food and drink, shake out sweet wrappers and empty any cool-box. Even small amounts of sugar left in a boat or caravan can attract foraging wasps, who may then find the building a convenient place to settle.
