Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Blackmore? Here's What to Do

A loft that is joined to the rest of the house by pipes and cables is joined to it for wasps too, and tracing those routes helps you protect your rooms.

The hidden routes

A house is full of small holes that nobody sees. Where a pipe goes through the ceiling to a tank or radiator, where a cable passes from a switch to a light, where a flue or extractor duct leaves a room, there is usually a gap around it. These are meant to be sealed but often are not, or the seal shrinks and cracks over the years.

For wasps in the loft, such gaps are routes into your rooms. If the nest is close, a stream of insects can find its way down along the pipe or cable and into a cupboard, a bathroom or a bedroom corner.

That is why wasps sometimes turn up in rooms that seem oddly far from the roof, such as an airing cupboard or a utility space.

Older houses and extended houses tend to have more of these gaps, but so do newer ones, where service holes are sometimes cut larger than the pipe itself. It is no reflection on how well your home is kept; these gaps are simply part of how buildings are put together.

The effect is that the loft is never quite as separate from your living space as the ceiling suggests.

Wasps also use gaps beside chimney breasts and along boxed-in soil pipes, which run from the loft to the ground floor without much interruption.

Where to look from below

Check the ceilings and walls around where pipes and cables pass through, as far as you can see from the floor. Look for wasps crawling around a pipe collar, around the edge of a boxed-in pipe or around a light switch on an outside wall. Look at cupboard ceilings too.

Do not poke at these gaps, and do not push anything into them. A disturbed gap can release a surge of wasps.

Pay particular attention on warm afternoons, when wasps are most active. Sit quietly in a doorway of the room and watch the ceiling for a couple of minutes. If one appears, note exactly where. A repeated emergence from the same point is the best evidence you will get of a route into the room.

Do not use sprays or sealants

Householders sometimes try to fill the gap with foam or sealant. If wasps are using the route, this is likely to push them elsewhere, and any bubble of foam may fail to hold against the weight of activity above it. Insect sprays pointed into the gap carry their own risks, in a small space with people nearby.

Better to protect the room itself. Close the door, put a rolled towel at the foot of it, keep the area clear of food and move people away from that side of the house. Open the window to let stray wasps out.

Do not touch or move electrical items near affected cable routes. If you are worried about a fitting, speak to a qualified electrician after the nest has been dealt with.

If you have already sealed a gap and wasps are still arriving, they have found another route. Do not keep adding more filler. Leave it to the technician, who will deal with the cause and not the symptoms.

Telling the technician what you found

When you book, describe which rooms have wasps and which pipes or fittings they seem to be coming from. Say whether the loft has been used for storage, whether there is a water tank and where the hatch sits.

Wasp Nest Removal Essex works seven days a week, offers same-day service and covers Blackmore and nearby villages, for homes and commercial premises. The cost is a fixed £90 per nest, with one visit guaranteed, and £35 for another nest on the same property.

Book by ringing 01245 327274 or use the form on the contact page. If anyone at home is allergic to stings, tell the business at the time so the booking can be prioritised.

Photographs of the gaps, taken from the floor with the flash off, are helpful if you can take them without leaning over a wasp. Otherwise, a clear description is entirely sufficient.

On the day

The technician will find the nest and treat it. They may check the places where you have seen wasps indoors to see how they are travelling. Keep children and pets away. You do not need to move any pipes or open any panels.

If a bathroom or cupboard has been affected, leave the door closed until the technician says otherwise.

If wasps have been coming into the airing cupboard, empty nothing out until the technician has been. Towels and bedding can hide a few sleepy wasps, so shake them out in the garden afterwards, away from where people sit.

Closing the routes afterwards

When all activity has stopped, it makes sense to seal gaps around pipes and cables. A plumber or builder can fit proper collars and seals. This also helps with draughts and heat loss, so it is a worthwhile job in its own right.

Sweep up dead wasps from cupboards and sills, wearing shoes. Say at booking if you would like the empty nest taken down, and ask whether that is possible. In the spring, check the pipe collars again, along with the roof edge.

Every house has service routes, and every spring is a good moment to check them. A quick look at pipe collars in the bathroom and kitchen, and a plan to refresh worn sealant, is a simple way to keep the problem from recurring.

Frequently asked questions

How can wasps get from the loft to my bathroom?
Through gaps around pipes, cables, ducts or boxed-in sections that connect the roof space to the rooms below.
Should I fill the gap with foam?
Not while wasps are active. It can push them elsewhere. Wait until the nest has been treated and activity has stopped.
Is it safe to touch light fittings near where wasps are coming through?
Avoid disturbing them. If you are concerned about electrical fittings, ask a qualified electrician once the nest has been treated.
