Wasp Nest in Your Garden Shed? Safe Treatment Options in Abbess Roding

What sits under and around the shed floor is easy to forget, and a hollow there makes a dry, hidden place for a nest.

The part you never see

Most sheds stand on a base of slabs, sleepers, bricks or a timber frame. Underneath is a gap, sometimes a few centimetres and sometimes a good deal more. Dead leaves collect there, a mouse may have burrowed in, and the air stays dry and still.

For wasps, that sheltered hollow is an obvious choice. The entrance may be a small hole at ground level, a gap where the base meets the wall or a chink between slabs. Because it is low and shaded, you may walk past it for weeks.

Expect building to start from late April depending on the weather, with the nest at full size in August and holding 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps. A nest under the floor can be loud in the building above, and you may feel it before you see it.

Sheds built on timber bearers sit a little off the ground, with a gap all round the edge. That gap is part of the design, to keep the floor dry, but it also lets small animals and insects come and go. A shed on a solid slab has less space, though gaps can still form where the slab meets the soil.

Looking at the base from a distance

Check the base in daylight on a warm day, from several steps back.

Do not crouch to look under the shed. Even a glance from close range puts your face at the level of the entrance.

It is worth thinking about the weather. After heavy rain, a nest below ground can be flooded, and wasps may move or enlarge the entrance. In hot dry weather, wasps come and go more freely, and the traffic is easier to see. Choose your viewing moments accordingly, and keep notes.

Why you should not fill the gap

It is tempting to fill the space with soil, gravel or rubble. Please wait. Filling an occupied hole traps the wasps and can send them up through the floor of the shed. It can also disturb the nest, which is only a few centimetres away.

Do not stamp on the ground, hose the base or pour liquid into the gap. Do not use the shed floor as a place to stand while you look. Footsteps send vibration through the boards.

If you must pass the shed, walk on the path side and keep to the far side of the garden. After treatment, you can fill the gap.

If the shed floor sounds hollow when you tap it, or if there is a smell of damp earth, there may be a gap or a cavity underneath. Do not investigate further while wasps are around. Make a note, and mention it when you ring.

Treatment and booking

A technician treats the nest. Treatment with Wasp Nest Removal Essex is £90 per nest, a fixed price including one visit guaranteed, and a second nest on the same property is £35 more. Domestic and commercial customers can book any day of the week, with same-day service offered and the work fully insured. Abbess Roding and the surrounding villages are covered.

Contact the business on 01245 327274 or use the online booking form on the contact page. Describe the base, whether the shed stands on slabs, sleepers or concrete, and where the wasps appear. Tell the team about any allergy to stings at the time of booking, so it can be prioritised.

The technician will advise on where to stand and when the shed can be used again.

If the shed is on a bank, a terrace or uneven ground, say so. The technician may need a particular approach to reach the entrance safely. Also say whether there are paving slabs around the shed, as those can hide further entrances.

Rebuilding the base

Once the nest is treated and the technician says it is safe, look at the base properly. Remove leaves and rubbish from the gap. Fill hollows with hardcore or compacted gravel, and make sure the soil is firm. If the shed floor is damaged, repair or replace it.

A solid concrete base or a layer of slabs bedded on sand is harder for wasps to use than a loose frame on soil. If you are replacing the base, ask a builder about a design that leaves no gap.

Fit a strip of fine mesh around the base to keep out animals and insects, while allowing air to circulate, which also helps keep the floor dry.

Drainage and damp

Damp ground loosens and creates hollows. Check where water collects. A shed that sits at the bottom of a slope or beside a blocked drain may have a soft base. Fix gutters, clear drains and make sure rainwater runs away from the building.

A dry base lasts longer and is less attractive to insects and animals. Stand a spirit level on the floor to see whether it has sunk. If it has, correct it before the damage grows.

Check the base each spring. A couple of minutes with a torch from a safe angle gives you early warning of changes.

Think about the future use of the shed too. If you plan to replace it, ask a builder to design the base to suit. A raised, ventilated base with a mesh skirt gives you airflow without leaving open gaps. It is worth considering when the old shed comes to the end of its life.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check under the shed with a torch?
Not from close range while wasps are active. Wait until treatment, then check carefully.
Will filling the gap with gravel keep wasps away?
It helps once treatment is done, as it leaves less space for a nest.
Why does the shed floor shake when I walk on it?
Vibrations can disturb a nest underneath, so avoid the shed if you suspect wasps.
