Wasp advice
Important Information About Wasps This Summer
The best way to treat a wasp sting is not to be stung in the first place. Here are a few tips for the summer.
Tips to avoid being stung
- If you find yourself swarmed by wasps, try to move away slowly. Waving them away is the usual reaction, but it makes the situation worse by exciting the wasps, making them more aggressive and likely to sting.
- Wear an insect repellent, as these are effective with wasps too.
- Do not interfere with a wasp nest. The wasps will immediately attack in defence.
- Some flowers and shrubs are particular favourites of wasps, so try to stay away from them.
- Be careful eating outside, especially sweet, sugary things, including liquids, which can attract wasps.
- Some people avoid perfume and other strong scents, as they believe wasps are attracted to them.
- If you are working in an area where you can see many wasps, sensible precautions are long sleeves and trousers to cover as much skin as possible.
Keep an eye out for nests
Keep an eye out for nests in the garden and in the eaves of houses. If you notice more wasps than usual, there may be a nest close by.
